Description

I made this slider because I was not happy with my kids bumping the old one I printed and having the sliders all get shuffled. I always thought a toggle mechanism would be more fun and the reset feature was just because it was easy to add once I had all of the magnets.

For the first couple of makes, I will offer to make any custom label that is requested. After that, I will try my best to accommodate generic labels that are requested (i.e. dog fed vs Penny fed). I do believe with the Label-BLANK file, you can add text in most Slicers. Alternatively, the .STEP file of the blank is intended for those with CAD skills to edit the text. The font used for the days of the week is Arial Rounded, Bold which seems to be printer friendly.

Hardware (required for satisfying toggle mechanism):

  1. 38-46 magnets, size 6 dia. x 2mm thickness (I recognize that this is maybe not the most common size, so if there are requests for interested people, I can modify if requested)

How it Works:

  1. The toggle mechanism is provided by magnets repelling, not a mechanical feature. I find this type of mechanism satisfying and it will not wear out over time.

  2. Pulling the ResetComb will put them all back to the "closed/off" position at the end of the week.

Print Instructions:

  1. These instructions assume a 0.2mm layer height (0.25 FIRST layer is OK too). The walls/infill are not critical. All of the print files print without supports and should be oriented correctly when brought into the slicer (except the labels, sorry! print them TEXT UP)

  1. Print 14 sliders. Start with the contrast color and add a PAUSE or COLOR CHANGE at layer 14 to add the "off" color (black in my examples).

  2. Print 1 of each FrontPlate, RearCover, ResetComb

  3. Print 1 of the label files. Start with your background color and add a PAUSE or COLOR CHANGE at layer 26 to switch to your text color

Assembly Instructions:

  1. Start by adding magnets to the RearCover. Depending on your printer's tolerances, you might want to add a drop of super glue. The orientation does not matter as long as they are all the same. You can add magnets to all of the holes for a strong attachment to a metal surface and a strong reset mechanism (46 magnets). Alternatively, you can start with the top row and skip each row going down for a modest hold to a metal surface and lighter reset mechanism (38 magnets).

  2. Next, the RearCover over (beware of the super glue you just added, do not glue it to the table on accident). Insert the comb such that the side that was on the bed of your printer is face down (touching the RearCover). Add magents that attract to the magnets in the RearCover. This step can be frustrating if you allow your stick of magnets to get too close to the already inserted magnets because they might jump out.

  3. Lay all of the sliders face down and add magnets that will REPEL the other installed magnets. I put a picture with red/blue faces to demonstrate how they should be oriented. You can choose to use super glue or not (the repelling force will hold them in place if you choose not)

  4. Put the sliders in the RearCover part so that they are all to the left or right position

  5. Press the TopPlate on. It should be a light press fit. You can choose to open it and add super glue, but I recommend testing everything out first.

  6. Enjoy.
