Description
Before we get started, I just want to give credit where credit is due. The steering wheel STL I used was from this model. I also used the knob files from here.
Now to explain what this is. This is a brodie style DJI knob. Whats a brodie knob you may ask?
It's a small knob that you attach to something that spins, the knob itself rotates which allows for very easy 1 hand manipulation. Forklifts, for example have them on the steering wheels and believe me, they make you able to whip that thing around. People used to use them on cars, but they were eventually made illegal in a lot of places (and also nicknamed suicide knobs).
I decided to bring that concept to the DJI knob, so when someone yells "DJ, spin that ____", you'll be ready.
Print out the steering wheel and the DJI knob, no special settings required. The steering wheel clicks into the DJI knob and you can leave it at that if you would like. You can also print the separate parts in different colors if you would like.
If you would like the brodie knob, follow the following steps:
Print out the brodie knob using a low infill (I used 5%) as well as supports
Once it finishes printing, you will have to take it off the supports
Grab the small curved column protruding from the knob with pliers, along with the knob itself. There are supports within the knob that you need to break by twisting the knob while holding the column in place. Once you break those supports, you will notice it spins but has friction. Keep spinning it and the friction will go away. I also recommend some kind of lubricant such as WD-40.
Super-glue the column to the steering wheel. (This is why the column is a weird arch shape)
I think a better knob would be nice, one that would allow you to use 1 finger to spin it. Like if it had grip on the top.
Originally, I was going to make this in the shape of a turtle with a top hat as the brodie knob, but alas it is finals season and I don't have time to work on this, that's why I used someone elses steering wheel model as well. Would be cool to see what other people can do with this idea though.
