Yarn Holder

Description

Yes, another yarn holder, but this one with a vague "sakura motif".

This is primarily meant to hold a skein of yarn, hung from your wrist or a hook. The weighted base (in theory) is for use in a regular workarea.

The rod + base are in two-pieces for easier storage. The diameter of the base itself is just larger than a skein of yarn (sampling size: all of the ones I found in the craft closet).

Thoughts

The base is only held in-place by gravity and the weight of the yarn, so it can wobble. This does allow it to spin freely, but unclear if a future design revision will eliminate the wobble. (It's a great spinny fidget though...)

Not thrilled with the weighted base design yet; need to collect some usage feedback before redesigning. Recommend NOT printing the Weighted Base (v1) at the moment.

  • the magnet doesn't provide sufficient lateral fixture, especially at the top of the rod

  • the weighted base isn't wide enough, so even if the magnet was sufficient, it'll tip

Hardware Required

Sorry for the eclectic hardware requirements; it's what was in the workshop bin of loose parts...

  • Yarn Hanger

    • 0.25" dowel rod, your choice of length

    • glue (PVA, etc)

  • Weighted Base

    • 606 bearing (hardware or printed)

    • 0.5" dia magnet (12.8mm dia x 2.8mm)

    • washer (15.7mm dia x 1.2mm)

    • 3x M3x10 bolts (countersunk) and nuts

    • weights (pennies, sand, lead, whatever)

    • sticky feet

Instructions

  1. Print Yarn Rod Tip, Yarn Rod Base, Yarn Base, as oriented. Recommended to use supports.

  2. Glue Yarn Rod Tip and Yarn Rod Base to dowel.

If using the weighted base,

  1. Print Weighted Case Magnet Holder, Case, Case Lid, as oriented. Recommended to use supports.

  2. Press fit 606 bearing into Case. Press fit magnet into Magnet Holder.

  3. Glue washer into bottom for Rod Base.

  4. Use drill bit or bolt to ream out holes. Insert M3 nuts into recesses in Case.

  5. Fill Case with weights. Affix Lid and attach with M3 bolts.

As pictured: PLA, 0.4mm nozzle, 0.1mm layers.
