Description
This model is a housing for an optical bed leveling probe, designed for DIY probe assemblies.
The housing is intended for use with a solenoid and an optical sensor and is aimed at users who design, assemble, and configure such devices themselves.
Compatibility
Important:
This housing does not replicate the electrical connection, dimensions, or mounting method of any commercial bed leveling probes.
Compatibility with a specific 3D printer, toolhead, and controller must be ensured by the user.
Design
Single STL file
Designed to accommodate:
a 10 mm diameter solenoid
an optical sensor
Printing
Printing parameters are not fixed.
The user is expected to choose material and print settings based on operating conditions and personal experience.
Assembly
Required components:
2 × M3×10 screws
10 mm diameter solenoid
optical sensor
Solenoid Connection
In my implementation, the solenoid is connected to the second heater output on the controller board, using the board’s built-in power MOSFET.
Since the printer operates at 24 V and the selected solenoid is rated for 7–12 V, the voltage is limited using PWM control in the configuration.
This approach allows:
using standard controller outputs without additional hardware
adjusting the solenoid force via PWM duty cycle
Note on heating:
When energized for extended periods, the solenoid may heat up significantly.
It is recommended to:
minimize activation time
tune the PWM duty cycle carefully
consider thermal effects on nearby plastic parts
The solenoid can also be connected instead of a controllable fan output.
When using this method, the user must:
verify the solenoid current
ensure the fan MOSFET on the controller board is rated for this load
consider solenoid heating during prolonged activation
The exact wiring and control method depend on the controller board and remain the user’s responsibility.
Notes
This model is intended for DIY projects
Basic knowledge of 3D printing, electronics, and firmware configuration is required
The author is not responsible for improper assembly, wiring, or configuration
Reference Components
Images of the solenoid and optical sensor are provided as examples of compatible components only.
The final selection of components and wiring method is up to the user.
