Description
For my work I need to navigate to customers. So a dashboard mount for my phone is something I need.
I tried several different mounts. Suction cup to the front screen, sticky pad on the dashboard, hooks which go into the ventilation grill. None of them work for me. They are either too flimsy or break loose. Mostly in hot weather.
So I designed something myself.
The dashboard of the Volkswagen Transporter T6 and T6.1 have a ridge on the dashboard just right of the steering wheel (left steering). The front (front window side) of the ridge has an overhang.
These 2 parts were my base for a heavy duty mount which can be placed without glueing/screwing. It just hooks below the overhang, does not move left to right because of the ridge.
To prevent the mount from moving upward at the back side (closest to driver) I created 2 hooks which go around the edge off dashboard.
To prevent the mount from sliding towards the driver I added some thin foam on the bottom of the mount.
After 2 years of usage, it still seemed not strong enough in hot weather. The long part which goes over the ridge got hot and softer in the summer sun. Then the weight of the phone made the part bend. To prevent this, I later added 2 long holes in which M8 thread is placed to prevent bending. This has worked perfectly last summer.
Additionally needed:
2x threads M8 24cm long
6x M6 washers
3x M6 nuts
3x M6 bolts 80mm long
Some foam tape or something else to prevent sliding
This is just the part that goes onto the dashboard. I used parts of a Baseus car holder (one that had a sticky pad) to hold the phone. These parts are not in this model. Be creative. I added a few holes on top of the mount to connect a holder onto.
