History: Built in 1818 by John D’Arcy, the founder of Clifden town, this structure is a classic example of Gothic Revival architecture. While it features castellated towers and a fortress-like silhouette, it was originally a luxury manor house rather than a military stronghold.
Current State: The estate changed hands after the Great Famine and was eventually abandoned in the late 19th century. Stripped of its roof and timber by 1894, it now stands as a hauntingly beautiful shell on the famous Sky Road in Connemara.
