Description

This is a 3D-printed book counter designed as a multi-part build that assembles into a clean, durable counting aid. The model consists of a printed cabinet and a set of numbered tiles, allowing tiles to be swapped or replaced as needed.

The cabinet panel is designed to accept 6 mm × 2 mm neodymium disc magnets, which are glued into recesses on the back of the panel. The tiles themselves are pressure-fit only and contain no magnets. Once installed, the tiles snap cleanly into place, stay secure during use, and are easy to remove and change.

I used these 6 × 2 mm neodymium magnets in my build:

File organization

The model is split into two folders:

cabinet/

  • book_counter_v5-cabinet.stl
The main body that holds the tiles and magnets.

tiles/

  • Individual tile files (book_counter_v5-tiles-0.stl through -9.stl)

  • Grouped tile sets

  • An “all tiles” STL for batch printing

  • Empty tile variants for remixing or custom numbering

  • Tiles are 4mm tall in case you want to generate new text and merge via slicer

This layout allows you to print only the parts you need and reprint individual tiles if desired.

Printing notes

  • Tiles were printed using multi-layer color changes to create high-contrast numbers

  • Tile alignment is done by having the magnet hole on the tile slightly higher than the magnets on the backing. This pulls the magnets down against the 2x2mm rail on the bottom. So if you print your own tiles, just ensure the magnet is centered 25mm up from the bottom of the tile.

  • No supports required

  • Designed in FreeCAD with slicing via PrusaSlicer

  • Magnet fit depends on printer calibration and material tolerances - I was able to press them in with high pressure using a hard flat surface

Attribution

  • For the devil horns, I used this model with the horns printed at 70% size and then filed down and glued on.

  • The "books devoured..." text is using a Sacramento hand script via this Text2STL site: https://text2stl.mestres.fr/ (Fully Formatted Text Link). The script can be downloaded in STL format and merged within the PrusaSlicer.

Photos

Photos of my printed and assembled version are included to show:

  • Magnet placement in the cabinet

  • Pressure-fit tile engagement

  • Multi-color number clarity

  • Overall scale and appearance

Todo

  • add a "lip bite" white/red print to the front of the drawer to double as a handle. But due to printing complexity, I want to get my MMU attachment built out first

  • may add 3mf files for tiles so that layer config changes are present
