Description

این آخرین نبرده، پهلوی برمیگرده

The Lion and Sun (Shir-o-Khorshid) is one of Iran’s most enduring national emblems, with a history spanning nearly a thousand years. While currently banned by the Islamic Republic, it remains a potent symbol of Iranian identity, secular nationalism, and opposition for millions in the diaspora.

Short History: From Astrology to Statehood

The symbol's meaning has evolved significantly over centuries, blending astrological, religious, and nationalistic elements.

  • Ancient & Astrological Roots (12th Century): The motif originally combined ancient Zoroastrian sun worship with Arab and Babylonian astrology. It represented the sun entering the sign of Leo—an astrological configuration associated with the height of summer and power.

  • Safavid Era (1501–1736): Under the Safavids, the symbol gained a Shi'a Islamic interpretation. The Lion was interpreted as Ali (the first Imam of Shia Islam, known as the "Lion of God"), and the Sun represented the "divine glory" (Farr) of the king.

  • Qajar Era (1789–1925): The symbol became the official national emblem. During this time, a sword (the Zulfiqar) was placed in the lion's paw to symbolize military prowess and state defense. It was officially adopted onto the flag in the 19th century.

  • Pahlavi Era (1925–1979): The Pahlavi dynasty standardized the design. They removed the feminine facial features often depicted on the sun (giving it a more "masculine" or abstract rayed look) and stripped away some of the overtly religious interpretations to emphasize ancient Persian imperial glory.

The 1979 Revolution

After the 1979 Islamic Revolution, the new religious leadership viewed the Lion and Sun as a symbol of the "oppressive monarchy" and Western-backed secularism.

  • Removal: It was stripped from the national flag and banned from public spaces.

  • Replacement: It was replaced by the current emblem of the Islamic Republic (a stylized version of the word "Allah" that notably resembles a tulip).

Modern Relevance

Today, the Lion and Sun has largely shed its strictly "monarchist" meaning to become a broader symbol of cultural resistance and national heritage.

  • Symbol of Opposition: The flag bearing the Lion and Sun is the primary banner used by the Iranian diaspora and opposition groups at protests worldwide. It signals a rejection of the current theocratic regime and a desire for a secular, democratic Iran.

  • Cultural Nostalgia: For many Iranians, it represents a "golden era" of international respect and modernization, evoking a sense of nostalgia for pre-revolutionary Iran.

  • National vs. Religious: It is viewed as a symbol that belongs to the nation (Iran) rather than a specific ideology (Islamism), emphasizing Persian history over religious dogma.

  • Use Inside Iran: While illegal to display as a political symbol, it is still frequently found on antiques, carpets, and jewelry within Iran. In recent years, protestors inside the country have occasionally been seen waving it or using it in graffiti to signal dissent.
