Description
Unlike a rounded Roman arch, the Gothic style utilizes a pointed apex to distribute weight more efficiently, allowing for the soaring heights seen in historic cathedrals.
This model consists of 15 blocks, including the critical central keystone, and a specialized two-piece support structure. Designed for educational display or as a tactile desk puzzle, it demonstrates the physical principles of compression and friction. Once the keystone is placed, gravity becomes the "glue" that holds the entire structure together.
The set features 2 square post blocks, 12 precision-angled voussoirs (side blocks) and one central keystone. Because the blocks are designed to transfer lateral thrust downward through the columns, the arch remains stable purely through its geometry. This provides a hands-on lesson in how architectural forces function in real-world masonry.
To assist with the assembly, the kit includes a removable centering frame. Without this temporary internal bracing, the individual blocks would fall before the arch is completed. The support structure is split into two distinct pieces. Once the stones are set, slide the bottom one out from underneath so you can lower top frame before you slide it out from under the arch.
Once the supports are removed, the "Aha!" moment occurs: the blocks remain balanced in mid-air. This model is optimized for 3D printing with no external supports required for the pieces themselves.
