Zenki (前鬼)

Zenki (前鬼), one of the two protective oni (demons) who served En no Gyoja, the 7th-century mystic and founder of Shugendo.

The Legend of Zenki and Goki

According to legend, Zenki (the husband) and Goki (the wife) were man-eating demons terrorizing a local village. En no Gyoja subdued them by hiding their youngest child, making them realize the grief they had caused others. They converted to Buddhism and became his loyal protectors.

• The Horns and Fangs: These mark the character as an oni, though one that has reached a state of spiritual discipline.

• The Portable Shrine (Oi): The large box carried on the back is an oi, a traditional backpack used by Yamabushi (mountain ascetics) to carry Buddhist statues, sutras, and ritual tools.

• The Gourd/Bottle: Zenki is often depicted carrying water or a flask, symbolizing his role in serving the master.

• The Attire: He wears the robes and protective armor typical of a mountain warrior-monk, blending supernatural strength with religious devotion.

Dorogawa

Dorogawa is the gateway to Mount Omine, the most sacred site for Shugendo. The village itself is unique because it is populated by people who claim to be the descendants of Zenki.

After En no Gyoja's passing, it is said that Zenki’s five children founded five houses in Dorogawa to provide lodging and protection for pilgrims. To this day, the hospitality of the village is spiritually linked to these "reformed demons."
