Description
Update:
The laser cut steel parts have arrived! It came together without any issues. Everything just dropped in, I'm completely incredulous!
The steel parts are heavy. I underestimated how heavy they would feel in the hand. The weight makes the trigger much crisper, the teeth part wants to drop forward by itself, and the trigger wants to drop forward on reset.
Anyways, the quest for the full crossbow continues, but since Chinese New Year is upon us, any additional parts will take at least a month to turn-around.
Warning:
This is an educational model and not intended to bear any real load as the housing is still in STL.
What is this model:
This is a follow up to an recreation of an ancient Chinese bronze crossbow mechanism. Having testing the geometry in PLA, I feel with some small changes the parts can be done fairly easily in steel or aluminum with a laser cutter. Going forward I plan to make a model of a complete crossbow.
Note: this is a prototype and is subject to continuous changes. Parts are generally not interchangeable from previous designs.
See the previous model here:
About this model:
Instead of STLs for the trigger parts, dxfs of these parts have been posted to use for laser cutting. The two "teeth" parts need to be cut from 8mm stock, and the trigger and sear from 10mm stock. The housing will still be printed in PLA, as in the current plan for the full crossbow the housing will not carry any weight.
Additionally, you will need to source 1x D10mm x L26mm steel rod for the sear engagement pin, as well as 2x D5mm x L26mm rod for the Teeth Stop Pin and the Trigger Stop Pin. You will also need 2x M10x45 screws as pivot pins for the entire assembly.
Clearance has been kept deliberately loose for this first version.
Parts needed (just the trigger assembly):
Part list | Number of copies | Material |
|---|---|---|
Housing | 1 | PLA |
TeethMain | 1 | 8mm steel |
TeethAux | 1 | 8mm steel |
Sear | 1 | 10mm steel |
Trigger | 1 | 10mm steel |
M10x45 bolts | 2 | Off the shelf |
D10mm x L26mm rod | 1 | Off the shelf |
D5mm x L26mm rod | 2 | Off the shelf |
For the curious, this is a mock-up of the full crossbow:
