Description

An over-engineered fume extractor, very useful when you don't want to inhale toxic fumes from tasks like soldering, pirography, airbrushing etc.

There are existing designs that accomplish this task, but I wanted a robust object that could fit a high CFM 120mm fan together with carbon filters, and be easily operable without hassle.

My first half-decent fusion 360 project, made me learn a ton of stuff!

Wanna build it yourself? Check out my instructables!

Print Settings

Printer:

Eryone Thinker SE

Rafts:

No

Supports:

Yes

Resolution:

0.20

Infill:

15%

Filament:

eSun PLA+ Light Blue

Notes:

You need to have print the main shell in two parts, left and right. Lay the two parts on their side, and enable supports everywhere. This is so that the back part of the shell is supported, and that the carbon filter front and back walls are correctly held up. It will take a bit of time to take off the latter supports, but at the end you won't see residues if you do a clean job.

I suggest to have a brim around the shell, to avoid warping.

I printed both shell halves in a single run, and the lids after. The time taken for each print is:

  • shell: 34h
  • lids: 4h

TIPS:

  • when printing the lids, make sure that they are oriented correctly: the fan and carbon filter lids are easy to figure out (handle goes up), but the other two require special attention: print them with the bolt holes with the larger diameter up, so you don't end up with having to print more supports than needed.
  • The shell has slots for square nuts, if you can avoid printing supports inside them, as they are finicky to clean afterwards

!ATTENTION!

  • Given that my printer is not perfect, I ended up with the shell being a tiny bit too short horizontally, so I ended up with a seam in the middle when the lids were installed. If you can, make sure that your printer is well tuned before printing, but overall it's something you can easily don't care about as it's only a visual thing
  • Make sure your printer will actually put supports where needed on the half shells! My printer tried to impress me and the entire fan-sides of the shell (the two side-enclosures where you would put the fan and that would be high on the build plate) were printed without supports in the middle. Even with the best printer, doing 15cm long bridging sections won't look that nice when the pieces are assembled

How I Designed This

I took inspiration from this thing, which is made for smaller 80mm fans: given that I designed this for my gf pirography creations I needed more airflow, so I decided to just make mine from scratch. Overall, such a concept ended up looking similar to its smaller version, but when you go compact and simple you will probably end up with a very similar build too :P

Parts needed

Tools

Here is a list of all the tools you will need for building this fume extractor:

  • M3 Allen wrench
  • philips screwdriver
  • soldering iron
  • hobby knife/scissor/wire cutter
  • (optional) two color markers
  • multimeter
  • lighter (for the heat shrinking tube)

Hardware

And here is a list of all the hardware needed:

  • high airflow 120mm 12V fan, I personally used this one as it has a ridiculous 200CFM and comes with an integrated fan grill
  • 120mm fan grill if it doesn't come with your fan
  • 2x 12.8x12.8 activated carbon filter (aliexpress)
  • 12v power supply (aliexpress)
  • 10x15 switch (aliexpress)
  • 470 ohm resistor (aliexpress)
  • led light (aliexpress)
  • 12v female socket (aliexpress)
  • 8x m3 square nuts (aliexpress)
  • mini dc speed controller (aliexpress)
  • 8x m3x12 bolts
  • heat shrinking tube
