Description
A friend wanted a Weland-Yutani logo badge for her car. After looking for a commercial product and not finding one, I designed this one.
Design notes:
This is the company logo as seen in Aliens, not the alternate winged logo from Alien.
The fonts are as close to the original seen in the movie as I could get.
The middle logo is raised a little higher than the lettering above and below, to account for the semi-transparency inherent in the DeTool (DeWalt-coloured) filament I used, to remove blotchiness.
Fillets and chamfering added for light play and reflectiveness.
Printing notes:
Use PETG for outdoor use if you intend to attach this to a car.
The higher the quality settings, the more detail in the rounded edges.
I used Black, Silver, and "DeTool" (DeWalt Tool Yellow #ECBB00) PETG filaments.
Dry the PETG before printing to avoid stringing between letters
Optionally spray the top surface of the badge with a clear, outdoor, Anti-UV gloss layer for added shine and durability.
I suggest using two-sided 3M Automotive Super Strength Molding Tape (22-mm width) for attaching to the car
Two strips fit this badge well, trimming at the sides
Clean any glue stick / adhesive from the bottom of the badge before taping
Follow the tape instructions to apply to the car
A layer of black paint with primer on the bottom of the badge might increase tape adhesion to the badge, but it seemed fairly strong after being set for a day without
If anyone has a good technique for creating a genuine chrome effect without getting into mixing chemicals and using an air sprayer, please let me know!
