Description
I was frustrated by the lack of designer support for the existing models, particularly given the known design issues. As a result, I reverse engineered the files to enable (mostly) parametric design adjustments, resolve known issues, and still preserve the original design intent.
I’ve included files for the original Dell 1U micro mounting configuration (both left and right mounts), along with the parametric models. I also added comments within the SolidWorks equations wherever possible to make the models easier to understand and modify.
A significant design enhancement is the updated fastening system. The revised design accommodates different fastener head styles, larger fastener sizes, reversible fastening, and embedded (yet removable) nuts. A cross-sectional view of the mating joints is included to better illustrate the construction.
To eliminate the original limitation of requiring a specific fastener size, I recessed the fastener head and re-positioned the mating nut. The nuts can now be inserted from either the top or bottom while maintaining a clean aesthetic and sufficient rigidity. Additionally, I introduced a nut filler plate to reinforce the unsupported area and prevent tear out. This change allows the assembly to be fastened from either side of the device as needed.
The rear cover remains unchanged, and M3 screws can still be threaded directly into the device holder. I considered this a low-risk approach, as gravity carries the majority of the load in this orientation.
For users who only require a single device holder, I also redesigned a companion model to integrate with the new fastening joint geometry. See model here: https://www.printables.com/model/1601924-19-1u-rack-mount-bracket-improved
