Description
A butternut squash.
1:1 scale
Similar in taste to pumpkin, this type of winter squash belongs to the cucurbit (gourd) family along with melons, cucumbers and marrows. Also known as a butternut pumpkin in Australia and New Zealand.
This model should be printed with infill and support enabled for good results. I used Microsoft 3D Builder's ‘settle’ tool to find a sensible orientation, but for good bed adhesion you might consider cutting some of the bottom of model off or splitting it into several pieces.
Please be aware that the model files are very large, and may take some time to load in your slicer. Even the ‘low’ quality output is 42MB! If you'd like me to make a simplified version just let me know in the comments.
This squash was scanned using an Einscan Pro 2X and the Industrial Pack Turntable in the iForge, the University of Sheffield's student-led makerspace. Unfortunately we don't have the colour pack addon, so there's no texture data available.
This scanning method uses two cameras and a structured light projector with an automatic turntable covered in coded markers to get scan data with precision down to 0.04mm for small objects like this vegetable. Larger objects can be scanned with lower precision in handheld modes, but that often requires more preparation and sometimes the addition of reflective tracking markers.
Please leave a comment if you have any feedback, questions or suggestions, and if you print it please add a make!
