Finally cracked the first layer code - here's what worked for me!
Okay friends, I've been battling first layer demons for months and I think I've finally got this figured out. Thought I'd share the 5 things that completely turned my printing around:
1. Baby stepping while it prints - I used to set Z-offset and pray. Now I'm actively adjusting during the first few lines. Game changer for getting that perfect squish.
2. Cleaned with IPA AND dish soap - Turns out IPA wasn't cutting it for me. Started washing my PEI sheet with dawn dish soap every few prints and suddenly everything sticks like crazy.
3. Slow first layer (like REALLY slow) - Dropped my first layer speed to 15mm/s. Yeah it takes forever but man, the adhesion improvement was instant.
4. Nozzle temperature bump - Added 5-10°C just for the first layer. Helps with flow and gives me a bit more working time to get things dialed in.
5. The paper trick BUT... - Still use paper for rough leveling, but I finish with a 0.2mm feeler gauge. Way more consistent than guessing paper thickness.
The biggest revelation was realizing that "good enough" first layers were actually terrible. I was accepting way too much variance. Now I'm borderline obsessive about getting it perfect, and honestly? It's made every single print better.
My Ender 3 went from 50% first layer success to probably 95%+ just from being more methodical about these basics.
What's your go-to first layer trick that everyone else thinks is overkill? I'm always looking for new techniques to try!
