Glorfindel is one of the mightiest and most noble Elves in J.R.R. Tolkien's legendarium, a Noldorin lord of the House of the Golden Flower in the hidden city of Gondolin during the First Age. Renowned for his shining golden hair, fearless joy, wisdom, and great strength, he valiantly sacrificed himself by slaying a Balrog in single combat during the Fall of Gondolin, allowing many refugees—including young Eärendil—to escape. After his death, the Valar re-embodied him and sent him back to Middle-earth as an emissary around the year 1600 of the Second Age, his power enhanced by his selfless act. In the Third Age, he dwells in Rivendell with Elrond, where he notably aids Frodo by confronting the Nazgûl at the Ford of Bruinen, his radiant presence terrifying the Ringwraiths and helping secure the hobbit's safe arrival. Though his role in The Lord of the Rings is brief, Glorfindel embodies unmatched Elven valor and purity across the ages.
