Description
I have an Elegoo MarsMate filter that I use on my Eufymake E1 UV printer. I wanted a refillable and replaceable version of the filter the device uses. This allows you to get activated carbon pellets, filter material and some strapping to make a replacement filter.
You will need some type of filter media to place in the bottom and top of the filter. I recommend any type of cut-to-fit foam or filter for AC units from a local hardware store. I use the woven polyester material for air flow but you could use any type of air filter material you like. You will need one piece that sits in the very bottom of the box and you'll want to put a second piece over the top of the media. I have a supplied SVG with cut lines for the air filter. it is oversized to help keep a good seal.
You need to make a seal at the bottom of the filter where it sits in the unit. I use a dense, closed cell foam for automotive sound deadening. I used 1/8 or 1/4 inch thick self-adhesive foam. Any thing that will compress and make a solid, air tight seal is great. The weight of the activated carbon will be plenty to make it sit and seal tightly. Don't use open cell foam. If you can see thru it or blow thru it, you'll get leakage. You only need the bottom sealed, so a single piece will work. I have supplied an SVG for the cutout of this gasket.
You'll also need some velcro or any type of strapping you wish. I used 3/4in velcro from a big box hardware store and it works very well. Just loop it thru the slots in the lid and connect the ends.
I recommend using between 4-5 lbs of activated carbon media for this unit. It can likely hold closer to 7lbs or more, but it is unnecessary to use that much. I also HIGHLY recommend using some type of sieve or colander on the carbon before putting it in the filter. That stuff is pretty dusty and messy, so shaking as much of it off before putting it in the filter will help keep the MarsMate clean.
Finally just use two M3x10 flat head wood screws (or #4x1/2 in screws) to connect the lid and the main housing. The length isn't really important, they just need to at least extend thru the lid and housing.
Stick the gasket material on the outside bottom of the housing, place the filter material in the bottom, fill with your (now shaken) carbon pellets and place another piece of filter over the pellets in the housing. Finally, put the lid on the housing, screw in the two screws to hold the lid and body together and add the strapping of your choice for the handle. You are all set. The filter costs about $100 USD to purchase a replacement from the manufacturer. After the initial cost of the print (I printed it in PLA and it works great) and buying the (washable) filter and gasket materials, the only recurring cost is the replacement of the activated carbon pellets. You can pretty regularly pick up 5lbs online for $25-30 USD.
