Description
I want my meter to be able to hang somewhere. In my profession I often have metal panels or brackets where magnets can hold on to. So I wanted my meter to have magnets. In case no suitable metal surface is available, I want my meter to hang somewhere (right now realizing a hook would also be nice.... maybe in the future)
The original stand on the back is rather flimsy and will very likely break within a few times of use. So a more robust version would be nice
The band UNI-T is nice but it's not a Fluke (I think has mostly excellent build quality except for their current clamps with a wire, but that's another story). So extra protection would be nice. Therefore a TPU housing. This housing also protects the dial on the front; if the meter tips over and falls on the front, the dial (just barely) does not hit the surface it falls on
It took me 4 models so far (perhaps version 5 with a hook would be nice).
Model 1 was just the case with the loop and magnets. Just at the top a way of opening the case. This version had a problem: The width was slightly too small, especially at the top. So I went for model 2
Model 2 had a 1mm wider top. Way better. But it lacked a stand. The swiveling part with loop and magnets could be used but would not easily stay in place. Also the bottom is rounded so a stable situation could not be achieved when standing upright. Furthermore I added a way of opening at the bottom for even more easy removal of the unit. But then it appeared that the bottom part also could be slightly wider for a better fit. So up to model 3:
Model 3 had a stand which worked fine. A small beam between housing and the 'stand/magnets/loop'-part made sure it would not move. Two added 'feet' at the bottom also added more stability when standing upright. Also the bottom part is 1mm wider now. Unfortunately I wanted the stand to be even more strong (still using TPU). Also the stand now had a beam preventing it from moving but the construction which should hold the 2 parts together (with magnets) wasn't strong enough (the parts detached). Another few changes in model 4:
Model 4 is 0.5mm thicker (so it is slightly less flexible). The 2 swiveling parts now connect the same way but 2 little bumps prevent the small part from coming loose from the bigger part. The stand is now stable and the small beam is held firmly in place on the bigger part.
Material: TPU
Layer height: 0.25mm
Nozzle:: 0.6mm
Infill main body: 20% Gyroid
Infill 2 smaller parts: 100%
Supports: Added automatic supports but blocking all horizontal holes for bolts, locks at the top and botto and all 45 degree surfaces touching the build plate. In case you own a MMU printer, use another material for supports for more easy removal. (see issues)
In model 4 the supports on the flat surfaces of the main body were not easily removed. 2 possible causes are reduced layer height (Model 1-3 were at 0.32mm, model 4 at 0.25mm) and reducing the thickness of the horizontal surfaces resting on the supports.
In case you own a MMU printer, use another material for supports for more easy removal. If you don't have an MMU printer, then you could use a bigger distance between supports and surface on top of the supports. One other thought is pausing the print just after support is ready, then applying glue stick on top of the supports so after printing the glue can be solved in water (or perhaps the glue completely prevents the supports sticking to the surface above it.)
The gaps for the locks on top and bottom were 'closed' by the printer. I used an exacto knife to cut open the gaps. With the 0.32mm layer height this problem was way less than with version 4, printed at 0.25mm layer height
2x M3 bolt of about 3cm length for the hinge of the hook/magnet strip
2x Magnet 20mm diamter, 6mm thick, sunken hole for M4 bolt
2x M4 bolt with sunken head 14mm length
2x M4 nut, preferable with nylon ring inside
2x washer M4 15mm diameter
1 or 2 thin steel discs/plates to put inside the casing on which the magnets can hold so the strip with hook and magnets stays flat with the case
Tape or glue to put the discs or plate in place
Updates require:
2x small magnets, 7mm diameter, 1mm thick, one for the main body, one for the smallest part
1x small magnet 8mm diameter, 2mm thick for the part with big magnets
1x M3 bolt 25 to 30mm long (to fix the new part)
The 3 small magnets may not be needed. I added some ’bumps’ to keep things in place
In case you don't want to use magnets to hang the meter somewhere, you could also leave them out (I suggest you do use them)
[UPDATE 1 ]
Version 2 (orange TPU) uploaded. First model (red TPU) had a good fit, but toooo good. Inserting was some hassle, getting it out almost impossible
Solution:
Making the top width 1 mm wider
Making the walls thinner (2mm now, 3mm before) so it's less ridge
Closing lid not only at the top, now also at the bottom
Both closing lids 4mm thick (3mm before)
Has nothing to do with the problem but small change at the bottom where the magnet part sits in place, I added a small extrusion to keep it in place (without metal plates in the housing).
Possible changes I'm thinking of:
Making the lower width also 1 mm wider
Making the extrusion in solution 5 slightly longer for a somewhat stronger grasp
[UPDATE 2]
Version 3 was skipped from Printables.
Version 3 (printed in transparent red) was wider at the bottom, had an extra part to make it stand upright more easily (keeping the hanging part with magnets at a 40 degree angle from the main body). Unfortunately this model was lacking some things so version 4 (printed in sold/opaque red again):
Changes:
Also lower part is 1mm wider (for better fit)
Added 2 'feet' on the bottom for more stability when standing
The large part with magnets is slightly thicker (0.5mm) for stiffer part
Added an extra rotating part to hook onto the part with the magnets. This way the meter can stand upright
Added 2 holes (on at the bottom, one at the top) so you can push the meter out of the case more easily to replace batteries.
All in all, the changes of all 4 versions make that
the fit is better
the meter can be taken out more easily
the meter can stand upright
