Description
My DeWalt D28110 Grinder (discontinued) has only right and left handle positions. This adapter can be attached to the grinder using two existing front screws and allows for a top handle position. See pictures.
There are two versions of the adapter. The first (With Nut) has a slot for a M8-1.25 nut to secure the handle. The second (No Nut) has no slot and assumes that you will tap M8-1.25 thread yourself.
This top handle adapter should also fit DeWalt D28112, D28402, and D28402N, as they all share the same gear case assembly.
Modifying the adapter
You can modify the adapter to tilt the handle from -7.5 degrees (forward tilt) to +7.5 degrees (backward tilt). I find it most convenient at 0 degrees (no tilt), and the models I have uploaded here have no handle tilt.
If you need to modify the adapter, follow the link to Onshape at the end of this page. Click the “Handle Adapter" tab at the bottom. Now look at the top left of the screen, where it says “Configurations”. These are fields and checkboxes that modify the part. If the “Features” panel partly blocks them, position the mouse on top of the “Features” panel until the mouse pointer changes to the “slide” icon and drag the “Features” panel down a bit. This way you will be able to see all pre-defined configurations possible for this part. One can change pre-defined configurations without having an Onshape account or familiarity with CAD. Further changes will necessitate an account (it is free) and familiarity with Onshape.
To export the model from Onshape, first set all configurations as you want them. Then, right-click the "Handle Adapter” tab and select “Export…”. Choose “Format: STL”, “STL Format: Binary”, “Units: Millimeter”, “Resolution: Fine”. Alternatively, you can export in other formats, such as STEP.
Printing
Use plastic that can take some abuse. I used Micro Center's Inland PLA+ (which is probably re-branded eSun's PLA+). Time will tell how it holds up. The part is oriented in the position I printed it with supports. Clean the supports well, tolerances are tight to minimize wobble.
If you own a CNC machine, I suppose you can make this out of metal.
