🌿 “Rooted Mind – Bonsai of Life and Death”

This design reimagines Bonsai as a symbolic fusion of life, death, and regeneration.

A delicate Bonsai tree grows from a human skull, its roots extending downward and organically wrapping around the skull’s structure. They adapt naturally to the anatomy — flowing along the contours — creating a balance between harsh geometry and organic growth. The result is a striking visual contrast: fragile life emerging from a symbol of mortality.

Bonsai, skull and leafes were completely modeled in Blender, allowing precise control over both organic forms and geometric details, while ensuring the design is fully optimized for 3D printing.

The tree itself is interactive and customizable. Small, precisely shaped triangular holes are integrated into the branches, designed to hold interchangeable leaves. The leaf stems feature a trapezoidal shape, ensuring a secure and intentional fit — each leaf must be inserted in the exact orientation it was printed, reinforcing both stability and design precision.

Multiple leaf variations are included:

Fern (my favorite)
Monstera
Maple
Ginkgo
Beech
Willow
Hemp / Cannabis
Oak

All leaves are optimized for fast printing — each leaf is only 1 mm thick, minimizing print time and filament usage.

For an even more organic look, the leaves can be gently heated (for example with a hair dryer) after being inserted into the tree. This allows them to slightly bend downward, creating a more natural, gravity-influenced appearance.

To further enhance usability:

• The model is split into separate parts, so no multi-color printer is required

• Only minimal supports are needed, limited to the lower section of the tree

• The upper structure is optimized for support-free printing, reducing cleanup and improving surface quality

The skull is not just decorative — it is functional. It is designed to house a Bambu Lab LED Kit, allowing the model to glow from within and create a dramatic lighting effect that enhances the organic structure of the roots.

As an alternative interpretation, the design also includes a moon version. Both variants are compatible with the LED kit, but lighting is entirely optional. When printed in glow filament, the moon version creates a strong afterglow effect once the light is turned off.

Importantly, the Bonsai stands on its own as a decorative object — even without lighting or the chosen base variation, the composition remains visually balanced and expressive.

🌱 Design Intent

This project explores Bonsai beyond tradition:

• Not just a tree, but a story about growth from decay

• Not just decoration, but interaction and customization

• Not just form, but efficient and thoughtful 3D print design

It fits within the “Cross-Style Bonsai” category by combining organic nature with symbolic and slightly surreal elements, while still preserving the balance and harmony that defines Bonsai.

🌿 „Rooted Mind – Bonsai aus Leben und Vergänglichkeit“

Dieses Design interpretiert Bonsai als symbolische Verbindung von Leben, Tod und Erneuerung.

Ein filigraner Bonsai wächst aus einem menschlichen Schädel, dessen Wurzeln sich nach unten erstrecken und sich organisch an die Form anpassen. Sie verlaufen entlang der Konturen und schaffen so ein spannendes Zusammenspiel aus harter Geometrie und natürlichem Wachstum. Es entsteht ein starker Kontrast: zerbrechliches Leben, das aus einem Symbol der Vergänglichkeit hervorgeht.

Bonsai, Schädel und Blätter wurden vollständig in Blender modelliert, um organische Formen und präzise geometrische Details nahtlos zu verbinden und gleichzeitig eine vollständige Optimierung für den 3D-Druck zu gewährleisten.

Der Baum selbst ist interaktiv und individuell gestaltbar. In die Äste sind kleine, dreieckige Öffnungen integriert, in die austauschbare Blätter eingesetzt werden können. Die Blattstiele haben eine trapezförmige Geometrie, wodurch sie nur in der korrekten Ausrichtung eingesetzt werden können – das sorgt für einen sicheren Halt und ein bewusstes, präzises Zusammenspiel der Komponenten.

Folgende Blattvarianten sind enthalten:

Farn (mein Favorit)
Monstera
Ahorn
Ginkgo
Buche
Weide
Hanf
Eiche

Alle Blätter sind für einen schnellen Druck optimiert – sie sind nur 1 mm dünn und sparen dadurch Zeit und Material.

Für einen besonders natürlichen Effekt können die Blätter vorsichtig mit einem Föhn erwärmt werden, nachdem sie in den Baum eingesetzt wurden. Dadurch lassen sie sich leicht nach unten biegen und wirken deutlich organischer und lebendiger.

Auch in der Umsetzung wurde auf Effizienz geachtet:

• Das Modell ist in Einzelteile aufgeteilt – ein Multicolor-Drucker ist nicht notwendig

• Supports werden nur im unteren Bereich benötigt

• Der obere Teil ist gezielt für supportfreien Druck optimiert

Der Schädel ist nicht nur dekorativ, sondern funktional gestaltet. Im Inneren kann ein Bambu Lab LED Kit integriert werden, wodurch das Modell von innen leuchtet und die Wurzelstruktur eindrucksvoll in Szene setzt.

Als alternative Variante gibt es zudem eine Mond-Version. Beide Varianten sind mit dem LED Kit kompatibel, die Beleuchtung ist jedoch optional. In Kombination mit Glow-Filament entsteht bei der Mond-Version ein besonders schöner Nachleuchteffekt, sobald das Licht ausgeschaltet wird.

Auch ohne Beleuchtung oder gewählte Basis funktioniert das Modell eigenständig als dekoratives Objekt – die Komposition bleibt ausgewogen und ausdrucksstark.

Dieses Projekt erweitert die klassische Bonsai-Idee:

• Nicht nur ein Baum, sondern eine Erzählung über Wachstum aus Vergänglichkeit

• Nicht nur Dekoration, sondern Interaktion und Individualisierung

• Nicht nur Form, sondern durchdachtes Design für den 3D-Druck

Es ordnet sich in die Kategorie „Cross-Style Bonsai“ ein, indem es natürliche Formen mit symbolischen und leicht surrealen Elementen verbindet, ohne die Balance und Harmonie eines Bonsai zu verlieren.
