💀 Illuminated Skull Lamp – Prusament Spool Upcycle

Give your empty Prusament spool a second life as part of a striking illuminated skull lamp.

This project combines a decorative skull model with the functional reuse of a Prusament spool core and side panel. By integrating the spool directly into the design, it becomes both a structural and visual element of the lamp — and honestly, it ends up looking like a pretty cool hat for the skull.

🔧 Concept

The skull is designed to work with a standard LED lamp kit and includes a dedicated mounting system for parts of a Prusament spool:

• One spool side (with honeycomb structure)

• The central core of the spool

The core is closed with a customizable cover, turning it into a clean, illuminated centerpiece.

✨ Customizable Light Effect

The highlight of this project is the fully customizable front cover:

• A plain version of the cover is included

• You can easily personalize it with:

  • Logos

  • Text

  • Symbols

Thanks to the LED light inside, your design is beautifully backlit and becomes the visual focus of the lamp.

🧠 How to Add Your Own Logo (Simple Workflow)

You can customize the cover directly in your slicer:

1. Select the cover model

2. Use “Add Modifier” → “SVG”

3. Import any SVG file (many free sources are available online)

4. Select the SVG object in the object list

5. Resize and center the modifier object

6. Assign a different color/material

That’s it — your custom design is ready to print and will shine when illuminated.

🧪 Example Included

To help you get started, an example version is included:

• Skull with bones SVG

• Ready to test the multi-color and lighting effect

• Ready to print STLs with Prusa Slogan

🎨 Materials Used (Example)

For the showcased prints:

• Skull & lettering: Prusament PLA Blend Pearl White

• Cover: Prusament PLA Galaxy Black

This combination creates a strong contrast and enhances the lighting effect.

⚠ Compatibility Note

• The current design has been tested with Prusament spools featuring cardboard cores

• The newer spools with plastic cores are not yet available for testing and are still in transit

If needed, the model will be updated once these are verified.

Also note:

• The available “Dummy Prusament Spool” models do not fully represent the connection geometry between the individual spool parts

• Minor adjustments may therefore be required for perfect compatibility

🖨 Print Recommendations

For best results, I recommend printing the model with a layer height of 0.16 mm to achieve a good balance between detail and print time.

Supports are only required in the LED lamp cavity (see marked area in the screenshot). No additional supports are necessary for the rest of the model.

♻ Why This Design?

This is not just decoration — it’s a functional reuse of a Prusament spool:

• The spool core becomes part of the structure

• The side panel acts as a design element

• The system remains modular and easy to assemble

And as a bonus: it gives the skull a distinctive, slightly absurd character — like it’s wearing its own recycled crown.

💀 Beleuchteter Schädel – Prusament Spool Upcycling

Gib deiner leeren Prusament-Spule ein zweites Leben – als Teil einer auffälligen, beleuchteten Schädel-Lampe.

Dieses Projekt kombiniert ein dekoratives Schädelmodell mit der funktionalen Wiederverwendung des Kerns und einer Seitenscheibe der Prusament-Spule. Durch die Integration der Spule wird sie sowohl ein strukturelles als auch visuelles Element der Lampe – und ganz ehrlich: Es sieht aus wie ein ziemlich cooler Hut für den Schädel.

🔧 Konzept

Der Schädel ist für die Verwendung mit einem Standard-LED-Lamp-Kit ausgelegt und bietet eine passende Aufnahme für Teile einer Prusament-Spule:

• Eine Seitenscheibe (mit Wabenstruktur)

• Den Spulenkern

Der Kern wird mit einem individuell gestaltbaren Deckel verschlossen und bildet so das beleuchtete Zentrum.

✨ Anpassbarer Lichteffekt

Das Highlight dieses Projekts ist der frei gestaltbare Front-Deckel:

• Eine neutrale Version des Deckels ist enthalten

• Du kannst ihn ganz einfach personalisieren mit:

  • Logos

  • Schriftzügen

  • Symbolen

Durch die integrierte LED-Beleuchtung wird dein Design von hinten angestrahlt und perfekt in Szene gesetzt.

🧠 Eigenes Logo hinzufügen (einfacher Workflow)

Du kannst den Deckel direkt im Slicer anpassen:

1. Wähle das Deckel-Modell aus

2. Nutze „Add Modifier“ → „SVG“

3. Importiere eine SVG-Datei (kostenlose Quellen gibt es viele online)

4. Wähle das SVG-Objekt in der Objektliste aus

5. Anpassen der Größe und Position des Modifier Objektes

6. Weise eine andere Farbe bzw. ein anderes Material zu

Fertig – dein individuelles Design ist bereit für den Druck und leuchtet später im Einsatz.

Zum einfachen Einstieg ist ein Beispiel enthalten:

⚠ Kompatibilitätshinweis

• Das aktuelle Modell wurde mit Prusament-Spulen mit Kartonkern getestet

• Die neuen Spulen mit Kunststoffkern sind noch im Zulauf und konnten bisher nicht verifiziert werden

Falls notwendig, wird das Modell entsprechend angepasst.

Zusätzlich zu beachten:

• Die verfügbaren „Dummy Prusament Spool“-Daten enthalten nicht die vollständige Verbindungsgeometrie der einzelnen Spulenteile

• Daher können kleine Anpassungen für eine perfekte Passform erforderlich sein

🖨 Druckempfehlungen

Für ein optimales Ergebnis empfehle ich eine Layerhöhe von 0,16 mm, um eine gute Balance zwischen Detailqualität und Druckzeit zu erreichen.

Support wird nur in der Aussparung für das LED-Lamp-Kit benötigt (siehe markierten Bereich im Screenshot). Für den restlichen Druck sind keine Supports erforderlich.

Und ganz nebenbei bekommt der Schädel einen eigenen Charakter – wie mit einem recycelten, leuchtenden „Hut“.

• Filament deiner Wahl (Mehrfarbdruck empfohlen für den besten Effekt)
