Description

Wiwaxia papilio is one of the most distinctive and debated fossils from the Middle Cambrian period (approximately 505 million years ago). Best known from the Burgess Shale in Canada, it represents a bizarre "evolutionary experiment" from the height of the Cambrian Explosion.


Physical Appearance

Wiwaxia looked somewhat like a cross between a slug and a defensive pincushion. Its body was entirely covered in small, overlapping armored scales called sclerites.

  • Sclerites: These scales were arranged in neat rows and acted like a suit of chainmail.

  • Dorsal Spines: Its most striking feature was two rows of long, ribbed spines protruding from its back, likely used to deter predators.

  • Size: Most specimens are small, ranging from 5 mm to about 5 cm in length.

  • Symmetry: It was bilaterally symmetrical but lacked a distinct head or tail visible from the outside.

Anatomy and Feeding

Because Wiwaxia is often found as a flattened fossil, internal details are rare, but we know it possessed a specialized feeding apparatus:

  • The Radula: On its underside, it had two (or sometimes three) rows of teeth. This structure is very similar to the radula found in modern mollusks, suggesting it crawled along the seafloor, scraping up algae or organic detritus.

Evolutionary Significance

The classification of Wiwaxia has been a tug-of-war for paleontologists for decades:

  • The Mollusk Camp: Proponents point to the radula-like teeth and the creeping "foot" as evidence that it is a primitive relative of snails and slugs.

  • The Annelid Camp: Others argue the sclerites are more similar to the bristles (chaetae) found on polychaete worms (annelids).

  • Current Consensus: Most modern researchers view it as a "stem-group" lophotrochozoan—a fancy way of saying it sits on a branch of the family tree closely related to both mollusks and annelids, representing a transitional form before those two groups fully diverged.

Habitat

It lived on the muddy seafloor in deep-water marine environments. Its heavy armor and lack of swimming appendages indicate it was a slow-moving benthic (bottom-dwelling) grazer.
