This sleek and stylish scalpel case is for designers, artists and makers using the classic Swann and Morton No.3 Scalpel Handle! As you open the case, the scalpel platform rises out of it's cavity, revealing the scalpel that can be easily swept from of the top of the case for quick access. A magnet locates the scalpel back on the platform, for no-fuss stowing in a hurry.
Featuring a magnetically closing lid, magnetic holding to prevent the knife from rattling around inside, and a storage compartment for spare blades.
THIS IS NOT A STERILE CASE - DO NOT USE THIS FOR SURGERY, PRETTY PLEASE!
Main Body x1 - Minimal tree supports required for hinges, ironing preferred
Lid x1 - No supports
Plunger (the scalpel-hold-y bit) x1 - Needs a pause to insert magnet, ironing preferred
Hinge Arm x3 - A brim sometimes helps, external only!
2x Lengths of filament for the hinge
4x Lid Magnets - I used 3mm dia x 2mm long cylindrical magnets
4x Plunger magnets - I used 3mm dia x 2mm long cylindrical magnets
1x Scalpel magnet - I used a 10mm dia x 1mm thick magnet
Superglue
I know everybody owns different magnets, so have attached the .f3d Fusion file, featuring parameterised variables for each of the magnet sizes. Just go to "Modify - Change Parameters" in the design workspace.
Print parts and clean up brims supports etc
Test fit filament into all hinge parts
Press-fit magnets into lid, body and plunger (MAKE SURE THEY ATTRACT THE RIGHT WAY!!)
If you filament is tight, you can either sand the filament down a bit or use a drill to open up the holes a little (but be careful doing this!) - The hinge arms should have a looser fit than the body
Test fit the hinge arms to the lid, trim brim or elephants foot as required to get a flush fit, then remove them
Insert hinge arms into main body and secure with filament hinge - cut with flush-cutters
Install lid onto hinges - you can use the filament pin to secure but I like to use some superglue too
Flush-cut the lid filament
Once glue is dry, insert the plunger and run through a few times to break in the mechanism and get it running smoothly!
