Description
Turn a standard Prusament spool into a stunning neon-style lamp using EL wire!
This project combines recycling, creativity, and lighting design to create a unique and eye-catching decorative piece.
This lamp is built using a Prusament spool and a custom 3D printed structure designed to hold 2.3 mm EL wire.
Print the structure that guides the EL wire
Wrap the EL wire into the dedicated channel
Insert the structure into one half of the spool
Reassemble the spool using the original cardboard core
Close the spool hole with the Spool Cap
You can optionally use a small amount of glue to secure the cardboard core in place for better stability.
The cardboard core inside the spool can be used to neatly hide the EL wire controller, keeping everything clean and organized without visible cables.
To secure the structure to the new Prusament spools, it will be necessary to use glue, for example hot glue.
Printing the structure in white will help blend and smooth the appearance of the wrapped EL wire, creating a more uniform glow.
Printing it in black will instead create a stronger contrast, emphasizing each loop of the wire for a more defined look.
The result is a clean, futuristic neon ring lamp perfect for desks, walls, or ambient lighting setups.
This project requires EL wire with a length of 5 meters and a diameter of 2.3 mm.
5 meters will be slightly more than needed, allowing you to route the wire more easily.
The excess wire can:
Be cut to length (âš make sure to avoid short circuits and properly insulate the cut end)
Or be hidden inside the spool core, keeping everything clean and functional
You can choose between two configurations depending on your needs:
12V EL Wire with controller
Requires an external power supply
3V battery powered EL Wire
Fully portable and wireless
Perfect for wall mounting with a clean look
I’d love to see how you build this project. Your feedback is incredibly valuable and helps me improve my designs.
