Description

During the Napoleonic Wars, British Army officers wore gorgets as a metal, crescent-shaped badge of rank suspended from the neck, symbolizing "on duty" status rather than providing protection. These items, typically made of gilt brass, silver, or silver-plated brass, featured the King's cypher (e.g. GR) and were worn over the neck stock.
