Description
I recently went about upgrading an old Inspiron 3670 that was lying around to be useful and not e-waste. One of the challenges with this is that any serious hardware upgrades necessitated a replacement of the 290 Watt PSU, and the OEM optional 365 Watt PSU would not cut it for what I needed. Contrary to what some say online ATX PSUs will fit in the Dell Case, however, the way Dell has oriented the mounting holes means that most aftermarket PSUs will have the fan blowing into the bottom of the case. Rather than sawing or drilling a vent in the bottom to accommodate this, I came up with this bracket to "flip" the PSU mounting, and decided to post it here for others trying to do something similar, either in other Inspirons or in other computers requiring the PSU to be "flipped."
Frame is designed for #6-32 UNC screws; the fit is fairly tight, and screws will be cutting their own threads into it. Do not overtighten, especially if unscrewing and re-screwing. Frame is .20" (~5mm) thick, and is designed to fit in the footprint of ATX PSUs; check whether the frame will interfere with sockets or switches on your PSU, preferably before printing. Print at least in PETG.
You will need to procure 4 additional #6-32 screws, a total of 8. Line up the counterbored holes with the mounting holes on your PSU; the counterbore will allow flush mounting against the case. Then Line up the other holes with the bracket mounting points on the case; these holes are chamfered to help with the process of screwing them in. Before screwing it in, check whether the cable socket will be obstructed (to save yourself some time). Some case modification may still be necessary, but now instead of sawing or drilling a series of holes into the case it will probably only require a couple strategic cuts with some sheet-metal shears and some folding with pliers.
I used a Thermaltake Toughpower GF A3 850W. I still needed to modify the case, but all I needed was 2 small cuts and a minimal amount of folding.
