Seeed Studio TRMNL 7.5" (OG) DIY Kit IKEA RÖDALM Frame

All of the purely 3D printed options for frames for the Seeed Studio TRMNL kit were, in my opinion, ugly and/or hard to print. After trying a couple of those, being dissatisfied with them, and with aesthetics in mind, which is really half the point with something like this, it seemed that the best path would be to build this into an actual picture frame. After scouring this website I came across oscarb's model that uses an IKEA RÖDALM frame. I thought it was a great idea and the end result looked great. I picked up a RÖDALM of my own, printed his model out and used it for a while, then decided to design my own in the same style and concept. See below for more information about the differences between mine and his.

Printing notes:

• Print all three parts in the orientations given in the files

• Some supports will be needed for the battery cage

• Layer height 0.16mm, 0.2 would probably also work but I haven't tried it.

• Print in PLA. Sizing of all the parts accounts for typical PLA shrinkage. No need to scale anything. I haven't tried printing this with PETG or anything else.

• 20% gyroid infill

Assembly notes:

• Designed for and requires:

  • Seeed Studio TRMNL 7.5" (OG) DIY Kit

  • 5"x7" IKEA RÖDALM frame. I understand that this same model is sold/marketed as 13x18cm outside of the US.

• Do not remove the metal retaining tabs that come built into the RÖDALM frame. They are needed to hold everything together.

• Requires five M2x4mm screws to secure the logic board and the battery cage to the inner frame. Use caution if you try to use longer screws.

• Fit the battery into the battery cage that's built into the inner frame, then secure it by slotting the tabs of the other side of the battery cage into the little slots made for it. Secure it with a screw.

• Install the battery before installing the logic board.

• The screw holes are self-tapping. It will be slightly difficult to install the screws into them the first time you assemble this. I recommend installing the logic board and battery into the inner frame before putting the inner frame into the outer frame, in order to avoid possible damage to the glass e-ink display.
