Description
This 100% 3D-printed mechanical solar system includes all eight planets, designed with custom gear ratios to precisely reflect their true relative orbital periods. To make the model practical in size, both the planets' physical sizes and their distances from the Sun are mapped using a logarithmic scale:
Model Diameter (cm) = 1.29*log(Diameter/2000) ~ True Diameter in kilometers
Model Distance (cm) = 3.323*ln(Distance/25) ~ True Distance from Sun in million kilometers
Included in the files are a hand-crank and motorized input. The hand crank requires only the 3D printed parts listed. The motor parts for the integrated electronics (motor, battery, PCB) are from these links:
PRINTING AND ASSEMBLY NOTES:
The center pin needs to very rigid and should not bend easily, print accordingly
Any follower gear will most likely need some finishing with sanding and some sort of lubricant
Refer to attached instructions for how to assemble
Max part sizes are: 212x212mm (rightBase) and 175mm tall (centerPin)
There is definitely area for improvement in this model and design, feel free to comment about or remix my design.
Inspired by M4NU's Spooletarium, but designed completely from scratch, with all planets using different components and overall geometry.
