Insta360 Luna Ultra remote docking station for selfie stick

Introduction

The new Insta360 Luna Ultra is a fabulous camera with one outstanding feature (other than 33MB stills and 8k video), a detachable screen/remote control pad! To achieve something like drone shots (where there are frequent bans on drones) I like to mount the Luna Ultra on an Insta360 10 foot extending stick held over my head. The only issue for me is having both hands holding/fumbling things. I designed a docking mount for the remote pad that attaches to two popular Insta360 selfie/extension sticks. Now I can remote control the camera without dragging it up/down all the time or fumbling with a smartphone app. There are .zip files, of the model components, in other files.

Required/optional parts for this model

1. 4 foot stick mount (1 piece) that slides onto stick with a friction fit

2. 4 foot stick mount (2 pieces) that clamps around the stick

3. 10 foot stick mount (2 pieces) that clamps around the stick

4. Docking interface plate that is attached to the mount for either 4 or 10 foot stick

5. M3x6 threaded insert (4 per mount)

6. M3x5 cap screws (4 per mount)

Printing

1. Both .stl and .3mf models are included, they should be properly oriented when opened. If not, place the non-fillet surfaces on the build plate

2. I used an OPXL5H, .4 nozzle, 30% infill, structured profile

3. For the mounts I used .25 layers

4. For the interface plate I used variable layer heights to improve the detail and strength of the retaining posts/clips

5. I used Polymaker PETG, but may reprint with carbon fiber in the future.

6. I used grid supports under the retaining pins. Use a fine x-acto blade to first slip under then supports and then gently pry the supports away. They should come off fairly easily with care.

Assembly

1. If you print the mount models where both halves are included (it's what I did and what I suggest) you need to ensure your printer is tuned well as the interface retainer is a precision fit

2. If you print the mount models where both halves are included, they may require a little persuasion for separation. One solution is to place one of the mount half bottoms on the edge of a table and give the other half a gentle downward tap, this is usually enough for separation. After that they will easily slide for attaching/detaching from the stick

3. The 1 piece friction fit (4') mount slides down over the metal portion of the shaft and is a friction fit (about 1/2") onto the stick rubber grip

4. The 2 piece (4') mount is designed to also fit over approximately 1" of the rubber stick grip

5. The 2 piece (10') mount is designed to fit on only the smooth portion of the stick

6. For all mounts, the interface plate attaches to the mount with 4 M3x5 cap screws

Usage

1. I like to use Ulanzi quick release mounts on all my devices, tripods and sticks. That way I can easily construct whatever grip or support I need on the fly. They are very secure.
