Description
Red Cloud grew up under the guidance of his maternal uncle, Old Chief Smoke, after the early death of his parents. As a youth, he proved himself in battles against Pawnee and Crow enemies, gaining a reputation for courage and tactical skill.
His leadership reached its height during Red Cloud’s War (1866–1868), when he united Lakota, Cheyenne, and Arapaho forces to oppose U.S. Army forts along the Bozeman Trail. His victory in the Fetterman Fight—the Army’s worst defeat on the Plains until Little Bighorn—forced the U.S. to abandon its forts and negotiate on Lakota terms. This made Red Cloud the only Plains leader to win a war against the United States.
After the Treaty of Fort Laramie (1868), Red Cloud guided his people through the difficult transition to reservation life. Though he kept peace, he remained a fierce advocate for Lakota sovereignty, traveling to Washington, D.C., and speaking out against federal policies that threatened his people’s rights and lands.
He spent his later years at Pine Ridge Agency, where he continued to defend Lakota culture and autonomy until his death in 1909. By then, he had become one of the most photographed and widely recognized Native leaders of his era.
