Shave Soap Dish (fits 95g/3.3oz Art of Shaving soap)

Generated from jenkinl1302's "sample size" soap dish — very practical on its own merits. I needed something for a fuller-sized shave soap, thus the remix. (Fits "Art of Shaving" shave soap, 85mm diameter, 22mm deep.)

I'm not 100% happy with the squared "legs" that I incorporated into the design — they feel a little sharp. I might come back and add checkered knurling instead, or some rounded indents for fingers to grip instead.

Update (2020.12.22): I added a "Knurled Top" option - while I like the look of the original top, the original doesn't provide a lot of grip. Someday I may come back and just add a knurled base as well.

Supports didn't appear to be necessary.

Used Polymaker's Polylite PETG for the teal, and MakerGeek PETG for the blue. (I no longer recommend MakerGeek, but have some leftover.) In general, most of the PETG seem to have the same qualities, so it's not as key.

Update: the lilac purple for the optional knurled top is also from Polymaker's Polylite PETG line.

How I Designed This

I scaled the original source's bottom and top to the 85mm diameter of the soap. It also needed another 7mm of vertical space, which I added to the bottom portion. (The original bottom was rounded all the way to the lip where the screw started. Grabbed the lip and the screw portion up the 7mm.)

I scrapped the outside of the top — it was flat, and looked a little frumpy compared to the rounded base. Copied the bottom, and used that to replace the top's outside shell.

Update: The knurling was not done efficiently. The base object was easy enough - just make a shallow cylinder, grab 8 sets of vertices, and bring them in with proportional editing. Merging was messy, and I should have just replaced the old rounded top with the new cylinder. I stubbornly carried on, using boolean difference and boolean union. I had to clean up each of the 8 divot areas manually, then used "3D Print Toolbox" to find the more hidden non-manifold areas. Finally, I needed to recalculate normals for the outside - otherwise your slicer can have issues figuring out how to print it.
