Post-Printing

I printed it using PETG on my 3D printer and had a bit of touching up to do to make it slide relatively smoothly. This slide design can’t be printed without supports and removing them isn’t always that easy. When just a little thread of material is left behind the slide will get stuck.

Due to the printing layers you’ll never achieve a microscopic smooth surface.On the other hand, due to the relatively rough surface the slide won’t move on its own. So, the lock I put in isn't really necessary, in hindsight.

Be aware that since I’ve come to learn my 3D printer and I can take into account its tolerances when designing, all parts fit nicely together and assembly was fairly easy. However, the same design might not work directly on another 3D printer.

I designed it as slim as possible so you'll also need to sand down two opposite corners of the M8 nut that controls the height of the inner slider. If you don't the threaded rod will not cath the nut and the inner slide will not fit inside the outer slide.

Mounting it onto the machine gave some challenges. I designed it to use the original screws for the laser and for attaching the assembly to the gantry. After I mounted everything I found out that laser wasn’t square to the surface. The mounting plate on the gantry isn’t square. With the original mounting bracket that’s not a real issue because there’s enough space on the screws to tilt the laser. Not with my fixed slide. I solved it by using some longer screws and and six M3 washers to each of the bottom two screws to gain 3mm and to make everything square.

How I Designed This

The assembly consists of sliding mechanisme that allows set the laser height from the bottom of the machine (workbench surface) all the way up to the bottom of the gantry by just rotating a crank.

I designed it in FreeCAD and used standard metric parts.

An M8 threaded rod with an M8 nut in the inner-slide with the laser, to move it up and down. There’s a ball bearing (22mm OD, 8mm ID, 7mm high) in the top of the outer-slide mount and the rod is held in place by two M8 locknuts on either side. I also added a lock/stop in one of the sides that can be pressed tight with an M3 screw.
