Kallax Shelf SNES Cartridge Holder

This is a SNES cartridge holder for NTSC (North America or Japan) cartridges that will fit up 60 cartridges in a (slightly modified) IKEA Kallax cube shelf.

Modifying the Kallax Shelf

Remove the top wood piece of the shelf, and pull out one vertical section to make a double wide cube, then replace the top piece of wood. There will be some small dowels left behind that stick up where the shelf used to be, but those can be easily cut off. Do not remove the dowels completely, as they are needed for the shelf below that section.

Setting up the 60 Cartridge Holder

Print 10 of the "6 Slot" file, with 10% infill, 0.2 or 0.3 mm layer height, no support, brim or no bed adhesion. This should make a file that takes just less than 200g of filament.

Print 48 of the "Round" pieces and 20 of the "Dovetail" pieces with >10% infill, any other settings. Push 2 of these into each slot between two of the "6 Slot" pieces. You might have to tweak the scale of these to get a tight fit. I had to use a mallet to gently persuade them to fully seat.

You will need to make a setup with 5 wide, 2 high.

10 of these files will print with just under 2 kg of filament, which works out to less than $1 per cartridge space.

Before you put the whole assembly into the Kallax shelf, test each slot with a SNES cartridge to make sure it slides smoothly. You might have to sand a few surfaces to get a nice smooth fit.

Gently push the whole assembly into the double cube section, gently tapping on the thicker sections to push it back until the cartridge holder is in the position you want. If you want the SNES cartridges to be completely flush with the front, it is easy to insert one on the bottom row to check, butDO NOT HIT ANY CARTRIDGES THAT ARE IN THIS HOLDER as the back is only 2 or 3 layers thick and is easily damaged.
