An experiment in trying to easily use 3D sketches based off of simple revolves in Solidworks.

How I Designed This

Step 1: Extrude a cylinder and Chamfer the top.

Step 2: Revolve the main structure for the piece.

Step 3: Go to Tools -> Sketch Tool -> Face Curves and insert as many vertical and horizontal contours lines as you like.

Step 3: This provides a wireframe to construct your 3D Sketch.

Step 4: Revolve Cut your original Revolve sketch leaving only the base and 3D Sketches.

Step 4: We can now connect the dots for the Path of our Sweep of Centerline for a Loft.

Step 5: Create a 3D Sketch and work your way around the model using the Spline tool to create tangency points at each intersection of the circles and contour curves.

Step 6: Sweep or Loft along this new 3D Sketch using whatever Profile sketch you like. I used an octagon.

Step 7: Circular Pattern the Sweep/Loft around the the base as many times as you like.

Step 8: Mirror across one of the two Planes coming vertically out of the base.

Step 9: To Creat the Swoopy Sweeps that tope the scuplture, create a 3D Sketch of an arc that goes from the center of one octagon to the center of another. MAKE SURE one of the octagons is the original Sweep/Loft you created. This allows you to make the arcs tangent to tha curve coming up and makes the peice flow naturally.

Step 10: Sweep the top profile of one of your swoops to connect it to the next swoop.

Step 11: Circular Pattern your top Sweeps around the base.

Step 12: Use the following template sketch to create a line that will allow you to create a new plane that runs through the radius of your base and projects veritcally through the intersection of two of your top swoops.

Step 13: Create a Revolve shape on the new plane you've created to act as a "joining gem" for the top swoops.

Step 14: Circular pattern this Revolve around the base.

Step 15: Convert the top entities of the base to create some Extruded Cuts or Drafted Extruded Cuts giving the base some extra detail and you're done!
