Description

Soapdish only. The wall mount was there before!

Introduction

During the pandemic the hardwarestores had been closed to the public for some time. Whilst cleaning I destroyed our old bathroom siphon and I could not find any matching siphon in the neighborhood or in the basement. So I came up with the Idea to print my own siphon. It has been watertight for over 1,5 years now.

Soap dish

This soap dish is the perfect match for my 3D printed siphon.

I would have loved it to be printable as supportless. 

The supports are sadly only there, because I am to afraid of the model tipping while printing. I am quite sure it is possible to print without supports and only with a wide enough brim. But then you have to go really slow as the height increases.

 

Design history / Lessons learned

inputs:

  • 100% printed
  • with drainage
  • drainage to overflow hole in basin?
  • not the standard soapdish

  • RED as the siphon is

process: - pretty straight forward

  1. get all the dimensions from the bathroom
  2. design the surroundings to fit the soapdish and drainage
  3. think about orientation for printing
    1. on the soapdish itself: cant make the part concave
    2. on the pipe: maybe have to use supports or print suepr slow for it not to fall over => decided this was more important thus having a concave shelve later on
  4. ==> Check that the model has 45° angles for the planned orientation
  5. have huge problems with the spline and extrusion of the drainage
  6. late night - last chance to complete, print and submit to the contest - fixing all the issues in CAD and finalizing - also in slicer
    1. round all the important edges
    2. go back and forth from slicer to CAD to change small stuff
    3. paint on supports - change in CAD - reload model from harddrive - repaint supports because they are gone or smished into the model
  7. Print
  8. Go to bed

Luckily everything went perfect. I seem to be good at integrating things to fit physical objects. 

Supports - even with PETG - were super easy to remove (because of the few overhangs)
