Nikon SB-600 Flash Gel Filter Holder

This adapter slides onto the end of the Nikon SB-600 Speedlight Flash and contains a slot to slide gel filters into. Multiple sheets of gel filters can be inserted at the same time to increase the filter effect. The maximum number of sheets depends on the thickness of your gel filter material and how good a job is done cleaning out the support material from the slot. Assorted sets of gel filters are available online relatively cheaply.

I have included three file versions with slot widths of 1.0mm, 1.5mm and 2.0mm. Cleaning out support material is a bit tedious but it needs to be done well so that the gel filters slide in and out easily. Tools that will help with support removal are a small, thin-headed screwdriver and an Exacto knive.

I have also included a file version with the flash adapter as a standalone piece in case someone wants to take that and attach something else to it.

After the support material is removed, cut a thin piece of cardboard to the size of the opening and test fit until you find the right width and height for the filter material. You can then cut your gel filters to size. I cut my filters to 84mm wide x 71mm high. This leaves the filters projecting out the top enough that they are easy to remove.

I couldn’t find one that provided the tapered slip fit that I was hoping for so I designed my own. The FreeCAD design file is included for download. The design file can be used to change the model’s dimensions via the spreadsheet within the model file. If dimensions are changed within the spreadsheet, the model will update to reflect the changes. So, for example, the slot width measurement can be changed and the enclosure model will automatically adjust to adapt to the new measurements. Note that sometimes small changes may “break” the model.
