Bottle Opener - keeps bottle cap flat

  • History of this bottle opener: About 40 years ago my dad created and afaik invented the in the pictures shown bottle opener made out of wood. He made really many of them manually on his lathe - afaik more than 800 - and gave them away as presents to people he liked and wanted to say “Thanks” to. Some of them i know made it all the way from Germany to even Australia, Brasilia, USA and Cameroon... My dad is really great at wood working, but now that he turned 84 he is no longer able to create these awesome pieces anymore, so that i thought to recreate the opener in a more modern, easy printable design and make it available to even more people. :)

  • Internal name: Because of its design it was always called “Hausordnung“ = “house rule“ in our family but that was just a funny name for it. ;)

  • Function: The real good function of this opener is well known in our family and lots of friends and i am using it all the time as the only opener when i need to open such bottles.

  • Special function: The special function of this opener is that it keeps the bottle cap flat, so that you can close the bottle again and do not have to worry that f.e. some wasps will be able to get into the bottle when you opened it. Note: The cap might not seal the bottle fully water tight again - depends on the cap.

  • Usage: Opening the bottle works different to usual bottle openers. Here you need to place the openers hole with the screw on top of the cap and then slide the screw under the cap and press the handle of the opener down. With that the bottle opens really easy and the cap stays flat to be clipped on the bottle again. See picture below.

  • Parts needed:  You need a M5x25 screw with a flat head on the lower side of the screw to be screewed into the hole. To adjust the right height of the screw you can place a bottle cap under it so that the screw almost is on the same height of the edge of the cap:

  • Printing instructions:
    • 0.2 speed profile
    • Support painted to the top section of the cutout as shown in the last picture
    • Infill set to 20% should be enough
    • Brim set active for more contact to the bed, set to off in version 2
    • Perimeters and bottom layers set to 8 (Version 1) for strength and 4 (Version 2)
    • Ironing activated for the top layer
    • Printed in the last picture shown orientation
    • Idea: The rings might be a good color change section, but I did not try this yet
    • Note: In version 2 of the attached .gcode file i tried with 4 perimeters / wall lines and that seems to be stable enough too. This cuts of 2 hours of printing time…

  • Note: For testing purposes only several beer bottles need to be opened and were then drunk to ensure they were not wasted. Ah testing 3D print models can be such a hard job sometimes… Cheers! ;)

  • PS: If you printed this model I would be interested in a picture and maybe your country.

Happy printing :)
