Description
I wanted to add a USB hub to my Prusa MK3s. The StarTech ST4200USBM is an industrial 4-port USB hub with a DC power connector for 7-24VDC and a mounting flange with several holes. I made this mounting bracket to take advantage of the existing M3 threaded holes in the MK3s frame and mount the hub above the Einsy enclosure.
The mount requires one M3x0.5 heat-set thread insert, I am using McMaster 94180A331.
You'll also need an assortment of M3 button head screws, I am using three lengths: M3x6mm to mount the top flange of the hub to the thread insert in the mounting plate, M3x8mm to mount the mounting plate to the printer, and M3x12mm for the bottom through hole that mounts the lower flange of the hub - this screw passes through the mounting plate and threads into the printer frame. This might seem a little awkward but it yields what I consider to be the ideal mounting location for the USB hub - not too high, and not too low.
I wired the hub to the 24V power supply for the Prusa, but this is not required if you limit the amount of power drawn from the hub. Beware that the Prusa supply is not up to the task of powering large additional loads, so try to keep power draw to a minimum. With a single webcam attached to the hub I measured about 100mA @ 24V which is probably fine. YMMV.
