Description
Sanding and polishing dice requires flat sanding surfaces. So hand sanding on glass plates or pottery wheels is the solution. Sandingdiscs for drills mostly use velcro to attach sandingpaper to them and they have a softer base underneath (eva foam).
So making a sandingattachment for a drill was the main reason to make this tool. But having to switch the tool all the time is also time consuming so I decided to make separate discs with magnets to quickly swap between grits or polishing.
This is meant to work with all sorts of sanding and polishing papers and cloths you have. You can reuse the parts when the papers are worn out, just peal them off, clean the disc and apply a new paper.
So far this is version 1 and still in testing. The magnets are glued in with CA glue. Later versions will come with print in magnet slots.
Also in the works, a square holder for micromesh polishing pads (If someone has exact measurements in mm I would appreciate that)
Materials needed:
Printing and assembly:
Print with the magnet slots up. After printing give the top surface a slight sanding on a flat surface to knock down any little dips and irregularities. The bottom face should be nice and clean due to the printbed.
Add the screw to the base piece and put the washer on. Screw the two nuts on, counter the against eachother. There is not much force needed, just to make sure the wont come loose. The screw head is transporting the momentum to the sanding disc. The base is to hold it in place.
The magnets get glued in a alternating pattern, this makes it easy to print more parts later on and not worrying about the orientation. Check the images for this.
Adding sandpaper and polishing cloth:
So far I use regular glue stick to glue the sandpaper to the discs and am experimenting with rubber bands and zip ties to fix the polishing cloth. If I find better solutions for this, I update this section. Double sided tape will work as well, just make sure to avoid any overlaps in the tape to get a flat surface.
Another option is now a threaded version with a screw on lid. The lid has a small lip to hold the sandpaper down. This makes renewing the sandpaper easier and also mesh bound sanding papers (like zona papers) can be used, as the glue would squeeze between the fabric and ruin the mesh.
