Description

I just got my new Retroid Pocket 2+, so I came to Thingiverse to see if there was a printable case I could use for it. I found one that came close, Gadjet's 'Retroid Pocket 2 Case Slim'. This seems to be the best intersection of protection and ergonomic grip while still being slim enough for pocket use. I felt it needed improvements, so I made the following changes.

  • The original case won't snap onto the device correctly. When on the back, it collides with the trigger buttons. On the front, it collides with the Y and right direction buttons. Two things to fix this. First, I cut off the corners. Second, I widened the grips.

  • I raised the grip, so that there is more flat surface at the bottom. I did this for improved ergonomics. The way I hold the RP2+, in a way that I can access the shoulder buttons, is I rest my pinkies on the bottom of the unit, and my ring and middle fingers griping the grips. I later updated this to add a slope to the bottom of the grip to make it easily printable without the requirement of supports.

  • I removed the branding, wasn't to my liking. There is a bonus version for those who can print multi-material with a Zelda Triforce design.

  • While the two hooks on the sides do a great job of keeping the handheld secure, the hooks on the bottom and top needed slight tweeks. The hook on the bottom had a little bit shaved off, as I found the device wasn't quite fitting correctly.

  • The hook on the top was, on the other hand, too small. It only caught the device from sliding up if the handheld was in the case with the display facing inward, in "storage" mode. When actually playing it, I've found the handheld could slide up pretty easily. To fix this I've extended the hook at the top, and lowered it slightly. This means that it would now absolutely require support to be printable, so I've included support structure in the design model itself, with 0.02mm seperation on top and bottom.

  • I've added a hole on the bottom for the headphone port. I'm embarressed I didn't think of this for the original design.

  • I've added a slight indent for the microSD card cover. It might not be necessary, but in testing design updates, I found that cover might affect the fit of the handheld into the case, so I put in some space to make up for that.

  • Included an original option, an option without the side grips (a request from a Redditor), and a multi-material Zelda Triforce design.

1/17/22 - I've updated the design with grips on the side, inspired by PSP and Vita. I believe this goes a long way in making this much more comfortable to use. I've also generally cleaned up the model and smoothed out some edges. I think I can now consider this design finished.

6/21/22 - Added headphone port hole. Redesigned Zelda version for multi-material, decreased size of Triforce. Tweaked top and bottom hooks for better fit and security. Added indent for microSD slot cover. Added slope under back grips.

6/22/22 - Added two more designs, requested by u/emets31: FOX Unit from Metal Gear Solid, and Retroid “R” logo.
