Description

I have a few Xserves 3,1 2009 that have dying RAID batteries. Unfortunately since the servers are no longer in production their batteries are $80+ and likely to keep rising. To make matters worse to get at the batteries and tiny controller boards you have to destroy the aluminum holder or "shell" they sit in.

This holder replaces those destroyed aluminum ones. You can buy replacement batteries on eBay. Any 606168 battery should do but I specifically used this listing: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Polymer-Rechargeable-Li-Po-3-7V-2600-mAh-Lithium-606168-for-GPS-PSP-MP3-MP5/261472115222

After removing the original battery and controller board/cable you'll need to clip off the old battery and solder on the new one. Use this guide if you need help: https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Apple+Xserve-Mac+Pro+RAID+Card+Battery+Repair/39665

Once the new battery is soldered to the controller board you can hot glue the controller board to the bottom holder. Still on the bottom holder, also put some hot glue on the side of the battery, inside, to keep the battery from wiggling. It is hard to explain, but the battery's width is slightly (~3-5 mm) skinnier than the bottom holder. I WOULD NOT recommend hot gluing the flat side of the battery to the bottom holder. I finished by putting some hot glue on two of the top portion's corners and sealing the two portions together.

The top portion requires supports to print.

Please note: I haven't tested this in-depth yet; I DO worry about heat dissipation from the battery inside PLA vs. the original aluminum.
