Idea

This model's idea is a rebuilt and (hopefully) improved version of: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3964197

While I liked the original model and for this version used most of its measurements, I had a few issues with it and even my heavily used print is essentially a modified version. Time to learn Fusion 360 and set a few goals:

  • Threaded inserts in most parts, where an inserted nut would be a hassle
  • The whole build should be straightforward to assemble
  • Countermeasures to prevent something coming loose out in the field, in the worst case after polar alignment.

I'm not sure I'm 100% happy with my version yet, so feel free to suggest improvements! (and it's not been out in the field yet)

Parts needed
  • 4 Screws M4x20mm (DIN 912)
  • 4 Threaded inserts M4
  • 3 Screws M3x8mm (DIN912; many other M3 screws should work, even longer ones)
  • 3 Threaded inserts M3
  • 1 M10 nut (DIN 934)
  • 1 Screw UNC 3/8" x ¾"
Printing
  • Use additional perimeters for increased part strength
  • Supports only for the hexagonal cutout for the M10 nut
Assembly
  1. Properly seat the threaded insert into the bigger part. M3 from one side, M4 from the other.
  2. Fasten the bigger part to the Star Adventurer Base with the ¾" bolt.
  3. The M3 bolts on the perimeter are only there to lessen the chance of the ¾" bolt coming loose and to prevent the whole mount from turning, so use only a minimum amount of torque!
  4. Insert the M10 nut into the cutout (don't worry if it seems a millimeter too thick) and tighten the smaller part to the bigger one with the M4 bolts.
  5. Put all this on top of the EQ5 tripod and assemble the rest as usual.
