Soldering fume extractor- helping hands

This model has 3 parts: intake grill/helping hands mount, outlet hood, outlet grill/filter media holder. If you are just interested in moving the smoke away from your work area, you can print just the inlet and outlet pieces. 

I printed this in PETG, but any rigid filament should work. Place the objects grill-side facing the print bed, and you should not need supports. This cannot be printed with 0.6mm or 0.8mm nozzles, as the grill pattern on the inlet is too fine. I printed with a 0.4mm nozzle, 0.2mm height, >4 perimeters/top/bottom shells, >10% infill. 

I made this to work with 10mm filter media that is commonly used in commercial fume extractors. I cut a piece down to 60mm x 60mm (which was exactly ¼ of the pieces I bought). The filter piece should be sandwiched between the outlet hood and grill.

Any 0.4"/10mm filter media should work. 

I used a 5v 40mm x 20mm PC fan (so that I could power it from a USB charger), but you could use any 40mm fan. You will need long M3 or M4 screws (at least 30mm for the 20mm fan). Using the screws, bolt the fan in place between the intake grill and the outlet hood, with the fan air movement towards the wide opening of the hood. 

Once the part is assembled, it's possible to use a larger helping hands alligator clip to hold the extractor in place. Simply clip the intake grill at the recess along the triangular side arm.
