I didn't care much for the knob that came with my printer (MK3S single wing style) - it seemed awkward and didn't encourage a precise “jog” with index finger and thumb, which is my preference for most if its uses.

This led me to look for some alternatives, so I had a rummage in my supply of vintage knobs (!) and found a lovely piece that was possibly from an old radio or record player that I took apart many years ago. (Refer to photo of both.) It had a long stem with a “D” shape fit; this had to be sawn off, then the remaining knob top was drilled out a bit to fit the encoder shaft.

I was really pleased with this old twiddler. Very neat and comfortable to turn and press. Unobtrusive, and while not all in keeping with the rest of the printer, has its own charm.

The New Knob

Designed my own version in Tinkercad. Used a couple of gear generators to make the knurled top and fitting hole.

This design is in daily use!

It is just a little more chunky than an exact reproduction, but I was wary of making the base and stem too thin. Also took the liberty of changing the top to a slight concave.

I may experiment with another version that resembles the flat-top original more closely, as it does have a slightly finer feel.

Printing Notes

I printed mine with PLA through a 0.4mm nozzle and the shaft fit is quite tight. Turns out best when printed at 0.15mm layer height or smaller. No supports required.
