YoLink Water Leak Sensor Enclosure

This is an enclosure designed to enhance the utility of the YoLink Water Leak Sensor (validated with the model purchased in 2020, Model YS7903-UC). The leak sensors are effective on their own, but they are small devices and only alert when water comes into contact with them. In practice though a lot of leak sources may leak water from a variety of spots: for example a toilet water supply line could leak near the wall or where it meets the toilet, and a sink has a relatively large area of pipes beneath it, and if a leak is higher speed it might emit water at an angle. The goal of this device is to enhance the leak sensor by funneling water to the sensor over a large surface area. Additionally, by adding walls to the enclosure this also serves to trap water in the enclosure which buys you extra time to cut off the water supply or otherwise resolve the leak.

Key Dimensions

The enclosure measures 196.00 mm by 196.00 mm by 76.00 mm height and the funnel protrudes about 90 mm, and the interior volume is approximately 2.32 liters. According to water.usgs.gov one liter is approximately 4,000 water drips. Figures for leak rates hover around 60 drips per minute for a faster leak. Given these figures, the enclosure would hold approximately 2 hours and 35 minutes worth of leaking water or more for a slower leak.

Assembly

There are two variants of the enclosure included: one with a cutout at the bottom (shown in the photos) and one with a solid bottom. There are benefits to both. The enclosure with cutout allows you to wedge the leak sensor through the cutout which means that if a water leak happens outside of where you placed the enclosure then once it starts to cover the floor you will still be alerted, just like if you didn't have the enclosure. On the other hand the enclosure with a solid bottom relies on the enclosure being placed below the leak source, but if you do then it has more secure water retention.

If the cutout style is used then wedge the leak sensor through the cutout from the bottom; you should be able to get it quite snug. I personally left it like this as during my testing I was satisfied with the lack of gaps, but if you want to focus on water retention in the enclosure then you might consider adding some sealing to the gap. Just consider making sure that the leak sensor is removable if it needs to be serviced or replaced down the road.

For the solid bottom style just drop the leak sensor into the hole in the center.

For either style, print a cap and drop it on the top of the hole. This is designed to help make sure that water quickly reaches the center area of the leak sensor where the sensors are.

Printing Advice

I printed these with 0.15 mm layer height and the Quality preset with waterproofing settings based on https://blog.prusa3d.com/watertight-3d-printing-pt1-vases-cups-and-other-open-models_48949/, especially 6 perimeters. I have also in the past printed these with the 0.15 mm Quality preset and PETG successfully.
