Description
At full size the sword measure 983mm from tip to pommel. It is held together by three 8mm dowels, and fourteen 3mm pins. The model is pre sectioned into thirteen parts so it can be made on smaller printers, an uncut version is also available.
For the dowels I used carbon fiber tubes, as they are straighter and lighter than wood.
Glue all four hilt parts and the center section together around the 279mm long dowel using four 18mm long pins to align the parts. The two 10mm pins are used in attaching hilt part 3 and 4 together (this step was already completed in the above picture). Next glue the four war parts around the 576mm long dowel and use three more 18mm long pins for alignment. Do the same for the four peace parts and the 604mm long dowel.
At this point I coated the three sections in XTC-3D and sanded them to remove the layer lines. (It was much easier to do this in the three sections, a lesion I learned from building my last sword)
Next glue the two blades the hilt using the last to 18mm long pins to keep them straight.
After gluing all the parts together, I finished coating the part between the blade sections and the hilt and sanding the joints smooth.
I painted this with a base layer of spray paint, light orange on the war side and metallic aluminum on the piece side.
I then hand painted the war side with different shades orange using acrylics, wet blending the different areas together. The piece side was covered with several passes of a blue wash, carefully blotting it with a damp cloth to prevent it from pooling and to remove any excess from certain areas. The handle was also hand painted with brown acrylics and given a black wash.
Lastly the whole thing was sealed with several layers of gloss clear enamel.
