Description

Yes, this is yet another Raspberry Pi case. Does the world need another case? Probably not. I really liked the 3030-mounted case from Coopey and thought the method of mounting via the 3030 extrusion slots was pretty sweet -- it was much better than I had expected. But I also wanted something where the Raspberry Pi was more solidly mounted to the extrusion and wouldn't slide around or fall off when I moved the printer.

So, this is my attempt at a Raspberry Pi case that mounts to the frame using 3030 "drop-in tee nuts". It's possible to buy drop-in nuts online from a variety of sources, but I only needed two of them and who wants to wait for shipping? The drop-in nuts fit into the slots on a piece of 3030 extrusion without having to remove any endcaps; turning clockwise causes them to lock in place, turning anti-clockwise enables them to be removed.

Using the tee nuts it's possible to mount the case along many of the slots in the 3030 extrusion of the Prusa i3 MK3S. I chose the spot beneath the Einsy board, but there are many other good choices depending on where you want your Pi to be.

I'm including the tee nut files with this entry to make them easier to find; I'll likely create a separate Thing page for the tee nuts themselves, including other screw sizes.

After looking at early versions of the case I also set the mounting holes to be 43mm spacing, which means the case can be mounted with M3 screws directly into the pre-drilled holes in the frame above the Einsy case (see photos). The case can be mounted either "ports up" or "ports down", depending on which way you want your cables to run and where you'd like to avoid interference with other items on the MK3S.

The top of the case is just press-fit into the bottom of the case; there are a variety of bumps built into the case to provide a reasonable friction fit. This is my first time doing much of anything with friction-fit parts so hopefully it works for you as well.

Coopey's original case had a note that the 1mm bottom plate ended up sagging because of heat generated by the Raspberry Pi -- this design uses a 1.5mm bottom plate. There are also ventilation holes above and below the Pi.

I really like how the case turned out and that my RPi 3b+ is now firmly attached to the MK3S. A couple of jumper wires onto the Einsy board and I don't even need a USB serial cable or power supply for the RPi.

Printed in PLA, 0.2mm layer height, 2 perimeters. Infill probably doesn't matter a lot here -- I've done 10% and 20% and it seems to work fine.
