Welcome to Cambodia!
Angkor Wat (Khmer: អងគរវតត , "City/Capital of Temples") is an enormous temple complex in northwest Cambodia, and the largest religious monument in the world!
It was built by the Khmer King Suryavarman II in the early 12th century in the capital of the Khmer Empire, near the modern city of Siem Reap. It was originally a Hindu temple but gradually transformed into a Buddhist temple. It has remained a significant religious centre in use since its foundation. It's style is the prime example of Khmer religious architecture, with its characteristic "corncob" shaped towers, bas-reliefs (carved murals), and long galleries. It has become a symbol of Cambodia, appearing on its national flag, and it is the country's main attraction for visitors.
It was designed to represent Mt. Meru, home of the devas in Hindu mythology: within a moat more than 5 kilometers (3 mi) long and an outer wall 3.6 kilometers (2.2 mi) long (from Wikipedia).
