Katara Pigeon Towers - Doha , Qatar

Description
🇶🇦 مرحبا بكم في قطر
Welcome to Qatar!
This model was made by Dany Sánchez.
In the deserts of the Arabian peninsula, any source of material that can help the small agricultural production in the harsh conditions is welcome, so centuries ago a technique was developed to “cultivate” fertilizer: build pigeon houses and then collect their nitrogen-rich droppings. The patterned openings allow the birds to come in and out, protected from any predators like cats or larger birds. A door at the base of each cone allows the farmers to go inside and shovel the fertilizer out, starting a new cycle.
While many of these towers have existed in the region, the most famous ones in Qatar can be seen at the Katara Cultural Village, next to the Katara mosque. They are a great example of the adaptability and ingenuity of the people of the region.
